A concept album in music is an album whose tracks hold a larger meaning collectively than they do individually. This is a key descriptor of Ariana Grande’s latest release, Eternal Sunshine, making it one of her most interesting albums yet. I’ve never been a huge fan of Ariana’s music , I’m not a hater or anything, I just don’t gravitate towards her music. But with her name flooding headlines for the past while, I was intrigued to hear what she had to say.
Eternal Sunshine is a breakup album that combines the contemporary pop R&B sound that fans recognize from Ariana, but showcases a far more raw truth to her sound. When listened in full, you can hear through each track the story of her processing love and loss and all the confusion that comes with it. It is quite an interesting representation of her recent divorce where she is able to reflect on he early days on her relationship, the troubles that led to their separation, and the period of moving on afterwards.
I do personally think that Ariana Grande is typically a bit repetitive sonically, which tends to make her music less appealing. Although I still hear a lot of familiar sounds on this album, I do think that its conceptually redeeming. Eternal Sunshine contains some of my favourite tracks of Ariana's like 'boy is mine' and 'we can't be friends' but there are also several songs that I simply don't listen to.
I do think that Eternal Sunshine is an auditory experience that everyone should listen to. It might not be everyones cup of tea but it is surly worth a try!
