I've heard many mixed reviews of this album and of Gracie Abrams' work as a whole, but here's the honest truth. Gracie Abrams is an open and honest songwriter who can best be described as a lyrical storyteller more so than a singer. There has always been a lot of stylistic similarities but I think that stems from the fact that although I am personally a fan of her voice, that's definitely not her strongest suit. When people listen to Gracie they can't expect a crazy vocal register, but they can expect to be moved by an emotional story. And that I exactly what you get from her latest album The Secret Of Us.
I've been listening to Gracie for years now and this album is without a doubt my favourite yet. I think her time spent touring with Taylor Swift allowed Gracie to grow significantly as an artist while being mentored by one of the greatest storytellers of this generation. On this album, Gracie has been able to use her words to perfectly paint the picture she's trying to portray, in a way that i've only seen done on Taylor's albums folklore and evermore. This similarity makes sense once you reach track 5 which features none other than Taylor herself.
The Secret Of Us is not just a collection of songs; it's a testament to Gracie Abrams' evolution as an artist. Her journey from a promising songwriter to a mature storyteller is evident throughout the album, with each track offering a glimpse into her world of introspection and vulnerability. While her vocal style may not be conventionally powerful, Abrams' strength lies in her ability to connect emotionally through her lyrics and narratives. With mentorship from Taylor Swift leaving a noticeable impact, The Secret Of Us emerges as a standout work, cementing Gracie Abrams' place among today's most compelling musical storytellers.
